While the rest of Europe can be tormented by the thought of having to cough up more money to save Athens, once carefree Greeks are increasingly depressed by the day. Psychiatrists say the economic crisis has triggered an increase of 25% to 30% of the number of patients who seek their help.

"There is an increase in the number of patients suffering from minor psychiatric conditions: anxiety, panic attacks and depression," said Dimitris Ploumidis, head of a mental health center in Athens. "In September 2010, people had to wait two weeks for a consultation, now it's more like two and a half months. " (See photo of cheap protesters clash with police.)

Before the crisis began, Greece was proud to be at the bottom of the list in Europe for the number of suicides, at a rate of 2.8 per 100,000 inhabitants. But that could change. Experts believe that in 2009 the Greeks increased suicide rate of increase of 18% compared to 2007, with that figure expected to have climbed even higher in 2010.

Most people who commit suicide are from Athens or the island of Crete, where many businessmen committed suicide in the midst of serious financial problems. "The desire to commit suicide always has more than one cause, but a lot of those who turn to us for help are people who have used to make a good living and now are having financial difficulties," says Aris Violatzis, a psychiatrist from NGO Klimaka, who runs a suicide hotline. If experts believe these national blues to stem primarily from economic problems, suspect also worries about the future of Greece, to be too much work. "The Greek identity has undergone a tremendous blow," says Violatzis. "[People] are ashamed. The world today, thinks that the Greeks are cheaters and the black sheep of Europe. This is very difficult to accept. "
