Zelaya calls for an end to the ruling elite in Honduras (AP)

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras – former Honduran President Manuel Zelaya predicted Sunday that his supporters will win power from the Central American country's long-ruling elite.

In his first major public appearance since returning from exile, said representatives of the popular resistance front national that the rich have held the reins of power long enough.

"The oligarchy has indicated it doesn't want democracy and is willing to use force to maintain their privileges," said Zelaya, who was overthrown in June 2009, by a military coup which was backed by Honduras ' traditional parties, including his own.

Zelaya, son of a wealthy lumber and farming family that took a populist tone after becoming President, planned agenda "liberal socialism" marries will lead the elite power and govern Honduras for 50 years.

The former leader also repeated his invitation to hold an assembly Honduras to rewrite the Constitution. His efforts as President to stage a national referendum on whether to call such an assembly led to the coup.

After his speech, the 1,600 delegates at the meeting agreed that popular resistance front national should pursue legal recognition as a political party able to compete in the elections of 2014. Needs to collect petition signatures of 46,000.

The movement, including farmers, workers and political activists, formed after Zelaya was removed from power.
